Brewing an authentic Italian espresso at home — just as good as the one you'd get at a bar in Italy with E.S.E. pods

What is the E.S.E. system?

E.S.E. pods are designed to recreate a genuinely Italian espresso while staying practical and kind to the environment:

  • Diameter: 44mm
  • Dose: 7 to 8g of ground coffee per pod
  • Grind: calibrated for espresso
  • Authentic taste: a dense, creamy espresso with a rich crema
  • Sustainable and practical: the filter paper is compostable, effortless to use, and leaves almost no waste
  • True to the blend: coffee ground fresh after roasting, individually wrapped to lock in its aromas

Also known in Italy as cialde, E.S.E. pods make it possible to enjoy a bar-quality espresso at home — brewing becomes fast, simple and accessible, without losing any of the rich, creamy character of a proper espresso.

An open system, between simplicity and tradition

This is what truly sets E.S.E. apart from the capsules most of us know today: while brands like Nespresso or Senseo lock you into their own proprietary pods, E.S.E. has always stayed an open standard. The 44mm format, the dose and the grind are all regulated — but every roaster is free to create their own blend. The result is an almost endless range of choices, all compatible with the same machine.

It's also what sets E.S.E. apart from soft pods like Senseo's, designed for a lighter filter coffee: 70mm across, with loose, untamped grounds. E.S.E. aims for something else entirely — a true espresso, short and dense, crowned with crema, not a longer, milder cup.

Biodegradable by design

An E.S.E. pod holds 7 to 8 grams of ground coffee, precisely tamped and wrapped in a natural, compostable filter paper. No aluminium, no plastic, no glue, no dye between the water and the coffee — just coffee and paper. It's a difference you can feel in the cup as much as in your conscience: the water never touches anything beyond what it takes to make a good espresso, and the spent pod goes into the compost rather than the bin.

That same paper is also what lets the crema form naturally, under the pressure of the water alone — no shortcuts, nothing added. The result is an espresso that stays true to what you'd expect from a proper Italian bar.

Roasted, ground, and packaged to stay fresh

The coffee inside our E.S.E. pods is the same as what we sell as whole beans — the same roasts, the same arabica-robusta balance. The only difference is that the beans are ground at our roasters' workshops just before being packed into pods.

The advantage is real: you know exactly what you're drinking, and you can choose the way you would with whole beans — a touch more or less Robusta for body and crema, the intensity you prefer, something more floral or more chocolatey, or simply the roaster you already love.

Simple to prepare, exceptional in the cup

Making an espresso with E.S.E. pods really is effortless:

1. Preheat the machine and the cup.
Give the machine 3 to 10 minutes to heat up, depending on the model, and rinse the cup with hot water while you wait — a cold cup cools the extraction and flattens the aromas.

2. Insert the E.S.E. pod.
Centre it in the portafilter, logo facing up if the pod has one.

3. Start the extraction and let it run for 20 to 25 seconds.
Aim for about 25ml in the cup.

Pro tip: if the extraction runs too fast, tighten the small dial on top of the machine slightly — it controls the pressure applied to the pod. If it runs too slow, loosen it a touch to let the water flow more freely.

Takeaway

E.S.E. has been hugely popular in Italy for more than thirty years, and it has never broken its promise: an authentic Italian espresso, with no fuss and no compromise.

It's that same spirit of Italian coffee culture that you'll find at Barcino — a simple ritual, true to tradition, giving you a result that holds its own against any real bar. We've tasted and hand-picked our E.S.E. pods with the same care we bring to our whole-bean coffees: fresh Italian roasts, spanning a range of different profiles.

Our advice: work your way through the different E.S.E. pods in our range to find the blend that suits you best — the differences in aroma and flavour from one roast to the next can be genuinely surprising. And don't skip our decaf pod!
